This movie was thoroughly enjoyable.
I'm a fan of superheroes but the movies can be quite hit and miss. The Batman franchise for one (although The Dark Knight appears to likely be a far better sequel than Batman Returns could ever hope to be, but let's face it my boobs could make a film better than that) is littered with mistakes; Spider-Man was good but #2 bored the shit out of me and I've not even bothered with #3; Fantastic Four was OK, the sequel was utter shit; first two X-Men films were quite good, the third not so much; Hulk - let's not even go there (but I am really looking forward to The Incredible Hulk, even if it means I just perv on Edward Norton for a couple of hours); Ghost Rider was laughable; Daredevil / Elektra - sigh; Superman Begins - just kill me now; Wonder Woman will probably never get made and would it be worth it without Joss on board? I could go on for quite some time, really.
But anyway, back to Mr Stark.
Robert Downey Jr was perfectly cast. He is a fantastic actor and really, if he had not been in the role I can't think of anyone who would have done such a good job. Gwyneth Paltrow (known by myself and TAMS as Gwyneth Putrid) was actually OK. This is the fourth film I've seen her in where I've not wanted to poke her eyes out (for the record: Possession, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and The Royal Tenenbaums are the other three). Jeff Bridges was Jeff Bridges. Really, you can't say much more than that aside from the fact that he looked almost unrecognisable. The Obadiah look is good on him.
I also had the advantage that I knew very little about the Iron Man series. I knew the basics of how Stark came to be Iron Man, and I knew about Pepper, but that was it. Had no knowledge of Obadiah or anything which I think actually helped make it more enjoyable. For a genesis film it was good - not boring or dragged out like so many of them are. And it was actually quite funny in places.
Oh! Make sure you stick around for the end of the credits. I didn't and now I'm a bit annoyed.
See it. It's fun.

I loved Iron Man as a kid, and I'm a big fan of Robert Downey Jr. (have been ever since "less than zero").
I'll definitely be seeing this, I'm stoked Iron Man made it to the big screen, now if we can just get a decent Batman movie....
I still want to kill the person or people responsible for handing over X-men 3 to the chimps who made it. They put a bullet in the head of a great franchise.
As for your boobs making a better film than Batman Returns, I have no doubt your male readers, are vigourously nodding their heads and drooling all over their keyboards at the thought of the sort of movie your boobs would make :P
But yeah, I concur- it is thoroughly entertaining.
Heh... I meant to say your *straight* male readers, at least!
did your boobs ever make a movie?
I'd pay to see that.
No, my boobs aren't that talented (well, aside from that of appearing in a room a couple of hours before the rest of me gets there).
And yet, they still have enough talent to make a better movie than that.
well dress me in tweed and call me a talent scout.
I'm not saying a word.
Well, except, I've been a Batman fan for more years than I care to admiit. Second only to Superman.
DON'T SAY ANYTHING YOU WILL REGRET LADY !!!!
All of these movies are escape movies, not meant to be elegant works of arts.
I grew up watching the campy TV version of Batman, and have liked all the movies, both light-hearted and dark. And if the truth be told I like the dark versions better as they are true to the comic books, at least when I was a kid.
See I didn't even mention the word boobs (oops).
krypto - you perv!
lyndon - Batman and Superman are great. I really like them. But aside from the odd film here and there, in my opinion there has yet to be consistency in the quality of the films. I know they are not meant to be works of art, but they are meant to make you not feel like you've wasted a couple of hours of your life with something that seems like it is just thrown together to make money without any consideration for a reasonable level of quality.
I love the campy version of Batman - both the tv series and the movie. The first Tim Burton film was also excellent, but sadly the rest of them didn't even come close to meeting that standard.
