Burma devastated by cyclone

More than 22,000 people were killed in Burma's devastating cyclone and 41,000 are still missing four days after the storm slammed into the country's southern coast, the government said today.

Aid workers were racing to deliver food and water to the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta region, which was submerged by floodwaters, leaving scenes of utter devastation with homeless survivors running low on food and water.

SMH

This is just horrific. The death toll is apparently expected to pass 50,000.

Why is there so little coverage in the online versions of our newspapers about this? As I write this, the main article on the SMH page is the North Carolina Democratic primary.

Brisbane Times, ever classy, has an article about suits that you can wash in the shower. And the second highest article shown is about the BCC letting 13,000 people off the hook for excessive water use during the water restrictions!

The Age, thank god, sees that this story is more important than US elections or clothing.

Even the Courier Mail, the den of mediocrity, is giving the story top coverage. The Opposition Orifice deems the upcoming budget and the Democratic primary of more importance though.

And on not a single site is the story about the cyclone and the aftermath in the top 5 stories clicked on.

What is wrong with us?

UPDATE (12:29pm)
Now apparently the most important news for the SMH is the disappearing stomach of Grant Hackett. Nice.

Yep, you're right, we have our news desires twisted.

The funny thing is with online news, newspapers now know what the punters want.

Which is why there's 100 stories on the Austrian Dungeon Dad and oh so few on this. Coverage is starting to pick up however.
