EVERY Australian with an internet connection could soon have their web content automatically censored.
The restrictions are planned by the Federal Government to give greater protection to children from online pornography and violent websites.
Under the plan, all internet service providers will have to provide a "clean" feed to households and schools, free of pornography and other "inappropriate" material.
Australians who want uncensored access to the web will have to contact their internet service provider and "opt out" of the service.
Den of Mediocrity
Why? Because fuck knows, parents couldn't possibly be made responsible for the internet surfing of their children!
So, those of us who don't want random things blocked have to "opt-out". Self-righteous, arse-covering prigs.
It is not the responsibility of the ISP's to ensure that homes and schools don't get access to "inappropriate" material. It is the responsibility of the parents and the schools to ensure it. Don't fuck around with the rights of the greater public to protect a specific sector of the community when other methods can be used.
It is not the responsibility of the government to be a fucking nanny state. This is as ridiculous as the attempt to ban junk-food advertising 'cause of the effect it has on the kiddies.
How about making parents responsible for once? Their hands are held enough as it is. You want children - bare the full responsibility of having them, don't rely on the government to do the job for you.

6 reasons to click here:
Who gets to choose what gets filtered and what does not. Seems like an opportunity for governmental abuse. Businesses will have to be careful not to get on the wrong side of the government and get their web access blocked.
Like it will ever happen.
i haven't commented on it because as it stands the proposal is not workable. the australian government would be in the position of trying to succeed at something no other government has been able to do, even china.
secondly, internet filtering is easily done on the client side, at the school or wherever with something as simple as a firewall whitelist. it's odd that conroy wants to start his ministerial career with a massive failure. imagine how many votes they'll lose of people have to pay more for their internet.
probably it's because all technology ministers are idiots. you get some old fogey who has flunkies check their email and do any web browsing (probably printing off the websites) and they just don't know what to do when confronted with something more advanced than a transistor radio.
One of the very few times I'm going to be serious here in my comments.
RIGHT ON BABY !!!
There is no more "being responsible", it's everybody else's job to be Big Brother.
I'd like to see them try to do it here in the US, first the ACLU would get involved and people would be storming the White House.
If it hasn't happened during Anal Bush's admin, it won't happen.
As long as we keep the Conservative Zealots out next year during out elections.
Yep I agree. Censorship is a slippery slope. It's been proven. Besides they have the anti-porn filter already if they want it. Ergo ISPs do not have to provide it.
I agree, it's ridiculous, and I have 3 children. (And I just told one last night that I WILL look over her shoulder while she's on the computer from time to time, or she will not get on the computer AT ALL.
At school, the net nannying is so ridiculous, they can't access normal websites. Therefore, they can't use the internet for research at school! I don't know what the kids do who don't have 'normal' internet access at home.
